Amber Listserv / Another one taken by sellers of fake amber.

Hello everyone, I received this email this morning.  It saddens me to think that those in China have created such a buyer-beware atmosphere in the amber market. 

I have included the original letter I receieved plus my response.

"I just read your amber guide and found it very helpful.  I must have one of the finest collection of plastic pieces from China bought as amber.  Sellers said 'authentic;'  buyers saw 'genuine.'  I still see Chinese amber bead bracelets where every bead has a bee in it.  Come on!  Satisfaction guaranteed is an empty promise when an item is purchased for $0.99 but shipping and hanling was $50.  So they refund you your full purchase price.  Great!  Oh yes, there are plenty of those sellers around, including U.S. sellers who unabashedly claimed that it was their way to avoid paying eBay a good chunk of money.  One last thing, now there are amber-like plastic material coming out of China that would float in salt water.  The amber market is definitely not for bumbling amateur like me."

Actually, it still can be!  Simply avoid sellers in China and Asia in general (when shopping on eBay).  Join discussion groups like those offered by  Ambericawest.

Thank you for writing me.  I am sorry you got took by those crooks in Asia.  With your permission, I am going to post your message in my eBay guide Fake Amber from China.  If you would like a list of honest sellers here in the USA, Poland, and Germany, just let me know.  Also read books!  Ask questions through the amber listserv.  The folks there are honest, caring, and would love to help you in your hobby.
