One possibility (if the stuff proves to be real) is that chunks of  
something like amber could have been carried down into the area from  
glacier melt after the last great ice age.  I don't recall any  
specifics and don't have time right now to look it up, but I seem to  
recall that a similar substance has been found in Canada.
At one of the gem and mineral shows, where I used to do  
demonstrations of gemstone carving, another exhibitor showed me  
something that looked similar to amber and burned with a pleasant  
odor.  He had found it near the west end of Lake Superior while deer  
hunting.  I don't remember much else.

Wouldn't the species of conifers that produced the resin have been  
more likely to grow in an area that had distinct seasons?
