It is possible that this "amber" was brought down there by glacial action.  I personally think that any resin would be destroyed by such action, but stranger things have happened.

At one of the gem and mineral shows, where I used to do 
demonstrations of gemstone carving, another exhibitor showed me 
something that looked similar to amber and burned with a pleasant 
odor. He had found it near the west end of Lake Superior while deer 
hunting. I don't remember much else.

Wouldn't the species of conifers that produced the resin have been 
more likely to grow in an area that had distinct seasons?
