Adam,

    I don't think age is as important a factor in determining amber from copal as is the degree of polymerization. If the volatiles are gone, polymerization complete, and the resin inert, then it's amber, regardless of age. Thus, in my humble opinion, there can be very young amber.....and conversely. very old copal.

  Very interesting, and the photos look very nice.  I do wonder how the paleontologist quoted in the article can surmise so much (age of the amber, where the deposit is located, etc.) without really checking things out.  And if indeed it is 4 million yrs old, is that amber?  Here we go with the old debate again!
