I don't believe anyone would be using amber or copal as ballast. It is too light.

Cape Cod? Has someone found stuff on the beach there? Something that has happened in North Carolina, is people finding large copal balls on the beach after storms. It's not known yet if there is a source off shore, but one theory is that the copal was dug up from Colombia or somewhere in northern South America with stones for ballast, then dumped off shore before the ship came in to port. Once dumped, they stayed until dredged up by stormy waters, and drifted onto beaches. Could the same thing be happening in Cape Cod?
