hello kirk, in my opinion the Maya did not discover the amber but were shown the deposit by the Olmec. Simojovel is a known Olmec site and the Olmec were around long before the Maya. The maya were given the information to develop there calander as they use the same system as the Olmec as well. The Olmec were doing incredible lapidary work at least back to 2500 bc. I found a bead, made from fluorite, which I feel may date back to 5000 bc. one carving was so incredible the maya saved it and put maya glyphs on the reverse. glen
