Amber Listserv / amber vs. copal

Haven't been antwhere, just been too lazy to post. : )

Nope, haven't been to the "mines" in a couple of weeks and haven't had the time to look through what I have found over the past few months. I guess I'll finally get to sit down with my microscope for some long sessions this winter.

You're correct.....the medium that the resin sits in has a part to play in the degree / timing of the polymerization process.

Glad to see you're back Tom. Any good amber finds?
I believe you're absolutely right with regard to the degree of ploymerization. As a wise person once said, 'some amber is copal and some copal is amber'.

One more factor in the polymerization process would be the medium in which the resin is surrounded.

Could there not be very old copal and conversely, very young amber? Isn't the defining point the degree of polymerization rather than the age? Age is certainly a factor in the polymerization process, but, so are heat, pressure, moisture, and ?.
