Hello all,
I really appreciate Tammi's alert on the new edition of Patty Rice's
amber book ("Golden Gem of the Ages") and immediately went to Amazon and
ordered a copy. I was hoping that in addition to updated and expanded text, there
would be much better photos. Those of you who have the old book know what I
mean, but at least there was a color section, even if you couldn't tell too
much from them. The new book just came yesterday - enlarged and full of
information - but - not only are the photographs not improved, they are ALL black and
white! Does this make any sense? This book could be, in my opinion, the
definitive modern authority on amber the substance (not bugs) and there's not a
single color photo. Just grainy black and white that is nearly useless in
illustrating any point that the text might make. I am really frustrated by this.
For instance, in the discussion of the many types of cloudy amber, I would
like to see close-up color photos of amber that illustrate the many types of
cloudy amber she refers to - bastard, semi-bastard, flomig, etc. Nothing! And
not a glossary for terms. For years I had hoped that she would come out with
an updated and improved version of the first book, which was kind of a trail
blazer in its own right, and now this. I'm just venting here to people who I
think will understand. I know that color is costly, but why bother at all if
it isn't going to be done right?
Happy turkey to you all, Maggie
