Amber Listserv / Chinese fakes - success already in my quest!

it surprises me that people would actually think the Chinese amber is real in the first place. Even if I weren't a little knowledgeable about amber, I would spot is as fake from a mile away! Which is why I wont buy anything from China whether is it amber, turquoise, or a Gucci purse!

Problem is, one of the basic rules of retail sales is not to provide any information to the buyer which might prevent a sale. So sellers take a stance of "dont ask, dont tell".

For what its worth, I have noticed that buyers at shows have slowly become more knowledgeable about amber, the different kinds, and the various treatments. So we all need to keep up the information war.

I have also noticed that most of the Chinese amber fakes on eBay have not been attracting bidders. Good news, certainly.

It is an acceptable practice if the potential buyer knows up front that the amber has been altered from its natural form. The problem is that too many sellers of such altered goods do not reveal to their customers that the amber has been, in some way, altered.

In fact, Ive personally seen much of the above mentioned amber sold as 'natural'. And heat induced colors and spangles are not 'natural'.

Heat enhanced and 'sun-spangled' ambers from the Baltic, although possibly offensive to the purist, are ambers which have been produced for generations in Germany, Denmark Poland and other Baltic amber countries. It is an accepted practice.

Anything which gets rid of those hucksters is good, but I would second Tammi's caveat to be careful of possible lawsuits claiming defamation or restraint of trade.

It has certainly gotten ridiculous, it seems sometimes that 90% of the amber on eBay is the fake stuff. When I go to shows I also spend a lot of time explaining how to tell real from fake amber. Its too bad that the public is aware of amber fakes but not so much about all the fraud with jade, turquoise, and other stones. I have had to deal with more than my share of people claiming my inventory is fake, although they know nothing about amber.

We need to get rid of these fraudulent sellers before the whole amber market is destroyed due to no one wishing to take the chance of buying a fake. Once we deal with the Chinese, we can work on the sellers of Baltic and their dyed, enhanced, sun spangled, painted green/black, reconstituted and ambroid goods.
