hey Andy

if you have a small piece to experiment with you could soak it in acetone and see if that will save you allot of sanding
by removing the surface layer and giving you a smooth surface
I have seen some amber done in acid washes and it didn't look to bad
if you give it a try pleas let me know haw it works
