Hi Dale,
I would say it is the bud of a tree in the beech family.
I bet everything I own that your moss is of the family Dicranaceae, It's habitat was on oak trees and on wood in general and in forests. Because the moss is present with the bud, my bets are that your bud is of the Beech family, or perhaps of an oak..
