Please forgive the tardy reply, my ISP is upgrading to ADSL2+ and the net's
been hiccupping like mad or totally inaccessible for the past week.

Thanks to The Edgars for suggesting glass-beading. I believe that way would
be the best to remove the crust (with rougher grits..am thinking
sand-blasting) and smooth down similar pieces with the least effort. I shall
look into procuring the necessary machinery.

Tammi, the resin flows lengthwise on that piece. I'd venture to say it's a
resin mold of the trunk of a small tree. This particular piece is another
one of those that are inert to acetone on the outside, but react to it a cm
or 2 beneath the surface. Amber outside, copal inside, so to speak.

I'd better mail this b4 my ISP conks out again!
