Dear The Edgars, thanks so much for the photo tips...I'll definitely invest
in a fiber-op lighting system. Right now I'm glumly staring at a box full of
chips that contain dead bugs which have a very slim chance of ever being
identified at this point in time.
Tammi, I just returned from the Sabah Forest Research Centre (
http://www.forest.sabah.gov.my/frc/MainFrame.htm ). I met with Dr. Chey Vun
Khen, Head of the entomology department and showed him those pieces. Dr.
Chey and his staff peered into a microscope and pronounced that they didn't
know what the heck those things are. All they can say is those are not
extant insects.
I'm rather disappointed, but it was not unexpected. They only deal with
modern present-day insects, so maybe I had been hoping for too much. Dr.
Chey said that one of those bugs looked like a cross between a housefly and
a cicada, and another resembled a mosquito, but wasn't a mosquito, and one
more looked like a springtail but wasn't a springtail.
I've left 3 bug pieces with Dr. Chey hoping that some visiting scientist can
one day identify them. The centre has never worked with insects in amber
before and I've volunteered my services if they should need to polish up any
resinites. Perhaps I've spurred them into studying old dead bugs....or maybe
not.
According to this article
http://www.bbec.sabah.gov.my/overall/bbec12/Page%2049-72.pdf , the Centre
has over 110,000 mounted specimens of which 12,000 have been identified. Now
they have 3 more insects to add to the backlog. Sigh.
