Amber Listserv / Amber List: Fwd: Fossile in baltic amber

Tammi,

I really don't think it could be a fish.....unless it was placed there. Another possibility is that it isn't an inclusion at all but merely some swirls of white amber within the more traditionally colored piece. Please keep us posted.

Tom, I agree it APPEARS to be a fish with the tongue extended - but how that could happen in all reality beats the livin' daylights out of me. I'm anxious to see what others think, and if there is anyone in France or other country nearby that I can send this guy to for a good appraisal of the piece.

  Tammi,

That certainly is bizarre. It has the funus growth commonly associated with inclusions in Baltic amber...but @ 14 cm it's unusually large. Looks fish-like.......kind of like a squid from the shape of the head and placement of the eye and mouth. If that round thing is an eye. I can't wait to see what our more learned colleagues have to say. ATTENTION LEARNED COLLEAGUES.... please hit "reply all" when responding to Tammi so that we all can learn from your knowledge. Thanks so much.

Folks, this is probably the most unusual thing I have ever seen. A guy in France sent this message to us with this piece that is, for lack of a better word, just plain freaky!!! Have a go at this fossil in amber and please let me know if the images didn't come through. He is in the Marseille area, so PLEASE, who can I hook this guy up with to have an educated look at this THING? There is a second email with results of an electronmicroscope scan on the piece to prove it's really Baltic amber. I'll send that along next.

    Tammi
