I agree with Lester on the aesthetics side of coating amber. I never do it,  
and when I acquire a piece that has a coating, I do what I can to take it off. 
 My collection is a pretty good range of Baltic, Dominican, Mexican, Burmese, 
and  a few from Borneo, and they're in a wooden, glass fronted display 
cabinet - but  the only crazing that's taken place was in the Columbian pieces that 
I bought as  amber (and paid too much for, of course) which turned out to be 
copal. And it  didn't take long for the crazing to begin, either. The others 
haven't changed at  all. As to how they might look after 40 years, ask me then.
