hey Andy

a oval cant be set flush in a hemisphere its a geometric impossibility
and the adhesive to hold them in place will detract from the faceting effect that's why most faceted stones are mounted
not to say you shouldn't try  you might find that one setup that works but I have never had any luck with it
I know you were planning on having the stones almost flush but that will make a rough spot and will cause dirt to collect there and will drive you nuts
