Andy, you call it layer cake - I think it looks more like a candy bar with nougat and a layer of caramel.? Are you sure you can't just take a big bite of that stuff?? It looks yummy, as well as incredible!? The cabs that could come from it, or rather if you just sand and buff that baby just right, a huge honkin' desk top piece.? Wow, but you have some wonderful variety in the ambers you are finding!? And I'd love to see some cameos carved.? Between you and Edgars here, the possibilities are endless.

Dear The Edgars,
Your idea of layering amber to make cameos does not sound weird at all...it'll make a very nice contrast. In fact, there are naturally layered amber. Unfortunately the only thing I can carve with a modicum of skill is a roasted chicken or turkey, but I'm working on it. Please find attached 2 photos (front and rear views...the front portion was partially sanded to reveal the reddish layer) of a piece of Borneo amber which I categorize as "layer cake", for lack of a better name.
This piece is one of the weird ones. I found it today while washing a new sack of amber. The translucent layer is reddish in front, and light cognac at the back. It is inconceivable that one tree can produce 2 or 4 different colored resins. The only way I can guess of how this came to be is several neighboring trees being simultaneously injured by lightning/storm/twister. These trees fell against each other and their resin mingled.
I've been finding these "layer cake" pieces for several years now but have never posted any pix to the listserv because of a gentlemen's agreement with a pro carver who buys them. I cannot show the rough to anyone but him (and he pays thru the nose for it). This particular piece however is going into my personal collection (cos it's not up to standard for my client, and he has very high standards), so it can be shown. :-) I have found up to 4 different colors layered together in the past...very pretty!

I notice that you also have dark material
I know this sounds weird but could you cut slabs of light and dark material and glue them together in layers so you could cut cameos out of them
that would be very unique
?

Hope everyone's having a great weekend.
At 7AM this morning, I cracked open this chunk of Borneo amber along a natural fissure. Lo and behold! The inside is a nice creamy butter-yellow, just a few fissures and bubble-holes to contend with. This chunk made my day (and makes me wish each piece was like this one...greedy, aren't I?). I said it before and I'll say it again: I love my job!
Andy
