I find this interesting for a couple of reasons. For one thing, we know that mayflies are found in amber, albeit rarely. So this explains how mayflies, which live for very short periods of time and also in aquatic environments, can get trapped in resins. Second, it shows for me once again how befuddling scientific questions can often be answered by direct and simple scientific experiments. Why no one thought of doing this before is beyond me, but you see this kind of thing all the time in science.

I had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with Dr. David Dilcher in Lexington in April of 2002. At the time I had no idea of his import in the world of insects and amber, just was told by another amber fan and researcher, Dr. Martin Knoll of Sewanee in Tennessee, that Dr. Dilcher was on site and had heard I had part of my amber collection with me. He wanted to see it. He came by, was impressed by the specimens I had on hand and we had a very nice chat. Only later did I realize what an extraordinary man I had met. I guess sometimes ignorance is bliss. If I had known just who he was, I'd have probably made a blithering idiot of myself. I'm such a geek.
