Amber Listserv / Leaf?

Nice catch Tammi! I don't have the Atlas, but hope Santa will bring it this Christmas. : ) I did look up lacewings in Grimaldi's Evolution of the Insects and I think you may be right. The cell structure of some of the wings looks very similar to what I have. What do you think Doug?

  Hey Tom,

Do you have Atlas of Plants and Animals in Baltic Amber by Wichard and Weitshat? On page 127 you see Lacebugs. I have seen a few inclusions like your photo in other pieces, and they really look similar to parts of a lacebug. I'm curious to see if you think so once you look at their body structure. Mayflies and damselflies also have interesting and somewhat similar wing structures. But I'm no entomologist, just an observation I'm making. Very interesting anyway!

  Tammi,

A dendrite is a branched form of mineral structure which can resemble a tree or a fern, or ... a leaf. I've never run into dendrites in amber before. Most that I've seen look just like fossilized ferns in a stone matrix. Very deceiving.

I don't know, I'm thinking it resembles a wing of something I've seen. I'll do some looking in my books to see if anything looks familiar.

By the way Doug, dendritic refers to trees doesn't it? Ain't that botanical?

    Tom,

I would agree with you that the irregular pattern indicates that it is not botanical, probably dendritic in origin.

Hi. Is this a leaf? It was found in a piece of Baltic. Something about it just doesn't look right. Perhaps it's the irregular cell structure. Aren't plant cells more uniform? Any guesses or comments are always welcome. Thanks.
