Rosin was used to make the belt slip less over the pulleys that powered it.
You would simply apply a piece of it to the moving belt. It used to be
called colophony and had many uses in past... remember the huge piece of
colophony fished off Baltic Sea, that is currently at The Swedish Amber
Museum?
238 kilo (528 lb) and in a shape of a barrel? Most likely fell of a ship
some time ago;)))
