OK People I just have to put my 2 cents in.
   
  I used to have a piece of amber colored transparent chalcedony that looked exactly the same as the photo in the "amber" auction.
   
  As chalcedony is found easily here in Colorado I suspect that is what it is.

Rosin was used to make the belt slip less over the pulleys that powered it. You would simply apply a piece of it to the moving belt. It used to be called colophony and had many uses in past... remember the huge piece of colophony fished off Baltic Sea, that is currently at The Swedish Amber Museum?
238 kilo (528 lb) and in a shape of a barrel? Most likely fell of a ship some time ago;)))
