Opals ARE the hardest gems to grab with the camera; of course they look quite different (play of color) from each different angle. You probably'll never get most of the color play with any one shot. I get the best features usually by using a portable (strong) light source and propping it up from a low angle about 30-50 degrees to where your camera is positioned. Even then it usually takes 10-12 shots with slight variations of camera and lighting to get the one really good shot. You may want to look at some of my opal photos on my site...

Hi I am trying to take some pictures of beautirful opals to no avail. I have tried different cameras, light sources and back gounds to no avail. Anyone have any ideas.
