Amber Listserv / Dominican Fair- Gdansk, Poland

It is this time of the year again! The Dominican Fair (Jarmark
Dominikanski), the longest-running event in Gdańsk, which dates to 1260 (
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/1208790/Dominican-Fair ) is taking
place again: three week long affair beginning this July 26th with a parade
of famous citizens of Gdansk: Daniel Fahrenheit (rings a bell?;)) ), Jan
Heweliusz (an astronomer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Hevelius ),
Daniel Gralath a physicist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Gralath ),
Lech Walesa (need not explain Solidarity and Nobel prize), Gunter Grass
(Nobel prize author, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%BCnter_Grass ) and
the usual medieval merchants. musicians and joggles.
Amber wares will be sold at many of the several hundred stands for the
expected 5 million visitors!
Saturday, the 26th is The Amber Day:
- Dominican Fair Amber Tree- a happening involving the visitors and the Fair
guest's.
- Jewellery Workshops- where you can design and make amber jewellery under
supervision of famous Gdansk's artists.
- Archaic ways of amber working - a demonstration of old ways of drilling
and polishing amber by Eric Popkiewicz of Torun.
- Medieval coin striking- a presentation run by Eryk Popkiewicz of Torun.
- Inclusions in Baltic Amber- an exhibition of collections of Museum of
Amber Inclusions run by Dr Elzbieta Sontag ( www.muzeum.gda.pl )
- Amber Trees- an exhibition of amber trees by Gdansk craftsmen.
- World Amber Fishing- the first qualifier (might I add that Dr Sontag did
well in years past).
Plus many concerts and firework shows.
